Navigation on board the Notre Dame and  the Kapalouest

As soon as you get off the train, you will feel the sweet living of La Rochelle and the ocean call. From now on your only means of transport will be two boats exclusively for you.

Comfortably installed on the deck with a drink and a few gourmet specialities, you will be travelling in the breathtaking scenery of the old harbor. After exchanging with ‘Dan’ your guide and Jean-Pierre the Captain, the boat will start and between la Tour Saint-Nicolas and la tour de la chaîne you will then find yourself a few centuries back.

Passed its outside walls, you will be sailing through sea spray heading towards the mythical “Lumberjack’s bench”.  Sailing fans will help with the maneuvres and curious ones will be able to exchange with our passionate “sea dogs” on fauna or sailing. The next day a catamaran will take you sailing through the Britanny spillway to take you to the beauty of the Lumbarjack’s bench.  If the winds allows, 131sq meter of sails will be spread for a unique sailing experience. The group will enjoy the journey protected by the wild fairing and the bimini sheltering the whole of the cockpit.

Shellfish search on "le banc du bucheron"(the Lumberjack's bench)

Exceptional location, « the Lumberjack's bench » is a short lived sand island which appears and disappears during high tides, thus offering to ground the boat on very high tides and to discover its wealth and curiosities. Indeed, an extraordinary wildlife is awaiting; Scallops, clams, razor shells, longnecks, smooth clams, white sea urchins, and many more are dwelling well settled in this little paradise.

This is the time to awake all your senses, while the tide inexorably keeps going away, the birds are the first to invade the place, fearless fishers leaving behind only their lunch's leftovers.  With the use of many give-aways left by these sand lodgers, we will learn how to trace them back and how to catch them with a maximum of respect for this serene and fragile unique eco-system.

The old sailing ship : Notre Dame des Flots :

Build in Gravelines in 1942 based on the blue prints of a herringer ship dating from 1910, the ketch Notre Dame des Flots was trawling and netfishing in the North Sea until 1974. Deemed inadequate when new fishing techniques appeared, she was disarmed and left to rot in a boat cemetery at the port of Dunkerque. In 1976, Pitchoune, Jean-Pierre and Philippe bailed her out and started restoring her themselves. This was the start of 7 years of passionate restoration work.

Since 1983, Notre Dame des Flots has been sailing constantly on all the seas of the world ! In 26 years of sailing, Jean-Pierre and Pitchoune have covered a distance of more than 300000 sea miles.
